Louisiana Governor Signs Bill to Protect Vehicle ChoiceLouisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed House Bill 515 (HB 515) into law, which ensures consumers' choice of vehicle power plants and fuel technologies. This legislation will go into effect on August 1, 2024. The SEMA-supported law officially prohibits a state agency from restricting the sale or use of motor vehicles based on their energy source. HB 515 passed both chambers of the legislature with overwhelming support. The new law makes Louisiana the latest state to embrace vehicle choice. "SEMA appreciates Governor Landry and Louisiana's lawmakers for approving HB 515," said Colby Martin, SEMA's director of state government affairs. Check out Ted Willing and his 1982 Jeep Scrambler CJ-8. This Jeep can go anywhere but was front and center on Capitol Hill for Cars at the Capitol! Find out why he came to preserve what he loves! 🔽Ted’s vehicle is a 1982 Jeep Scrambler CJ-8. Ted resides in Maryland and does amazing things with computers. However, when he has the time, he also loves to build projects and enjoy them. Ted admits that much of the build was completed using items from Craigslist, mainly because he wanted to keep things as original as possible while doing some personalization and upgrading. In fact, he had totake a trip from his home in southern Maryland, all the way out to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to acquire the Scrambler tub. The frame was also purchased from a private entity off of Craigslist, and eventually Ted had all of the components he needed to create the build.Ted built the Scrambler to be a show-and-go-style vehicle. He said, “The thing is, it’s strong enough to handle any of the courses that people build, but I don’t like rock crawling because I don’t want to damage the body. The body is so pristine with no rust; I just don’t want to damage it. I’m not going to breakanything underneath and the track is wide enough that even in deep mud it tends to just throw things away and not into the body.”Ted is fully retired now, but when he was working, he was a computer programmer and then a facility manager for the Supreme Court of the United States. He also formerly worked on Capitol Hill at the Library of Congress. He learned how to do all of this when he first took his Jeep to get an oil change whenhe was sixteen and they charged him $19 to change the oil. Then he put sixteen-inch wagon wheels on it and took it back for another oil change and they charged me $29. They said it was ‘modified.’” So, next time, he watched the guy do it and thought to himself that he is at least that smart. So, going forward he did it himself and I learned how to do the things that needed done by watching others who already knew how to do it.A direct quote from Ted is, “You can spend a lot of money on a lot of parts, screwing it up a lot of times, before you equal the cost of a guy who already knows what he’s doing. That’s my whole concept.” Ted is particularly proud of his custom roll out storage in the rear, original dash pad with custom dash, original roll bar, as well as the AMC engine, frame, and tub.

SEMA Applauds Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Action to Reverse the State's EV Mandates 👏Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today that the Commonwealth would not adopt California’s 2035 ban on selling new gas- and diesel-powered motor vehicles. “Seventeen states have attached themselves to California’s emissions standards over the past 20 plus years. Nine states have passed laws and/or resolutions rejecting government deciding what technology American consumers must purchase and buy,” said Mike Spagnola, SEMA’s president & CEO. “Virginia is now the first state in the nation to untangle itself from California’s emissions standards and EV mandates. We applaud Governor Youngkin for this bold action that rejects the notion that California should determine policies for nearly half of American consumers. We urge other states to follow Virginia’s lead.”Virginia lawmakers passed a law in 2021 under Youngkin’s predecessor, tying the state to California's emissions standards, which includes California’s 100% EV mandate by 2035. Since then, SEMA-supported bills aiming to repeal the law have narrowly failed to pass the Democratically controlled legislature. Elected in 2021, Youngkin campaigned on repealing California’s standards and pledged to follow through during his 2023 State of the Commonwealth address.“It defies common sense that in 2021, lawmakers decided that instead of writing our own electric vehicle laws, Virginia would simply do whatever California decided to do,” said Governor Youngkin. “Because lawmakers outsourced their responsibilities and surrendered our values to California—Virginians face a mandate starting in 2024 that limits and eventually bans the buying of gas-powered cars or trucks. Unless we act, Virginia is hostage to the extreme policies of California. Common sense says that the law of Virginia should be written by elected leaders here—not outsourced to radical bureaucrats in California.”SEMA has led the charge to pass laws and/or resolutions in nine states that would outlaw states and local governments from mandating a singular vehicle technology over others and protect the American consumer’ right to choose the vehicle technology that best suits them and their families. SEMA’s efforts also led to the successful delay in the adoption of California's ICE ban in Connecticut and Maine earlier this year.
