💹 Members of SECU, America's second largest credit union who serves 2.8 million customers initially voted against risk based lending because it broke the credit union’s successful 85-year cooperative philosophy of treating every member fairly and sharing the benefits of membership. However, after the board voted to proceed, starting in their auto book, the results were amazing.- 35% increase in origination volume- 81% increase for "A-tier" borrowers- Reduction in delinquency and write-offsSome board members still do not agree with the move, stating that risk-based lending and pricing are discriminatory and creates "second-class members". This is a very interesting perspective when trying to balance member equality with lending money, which is heavily influenced by credit risk.Should those with better credit risk be subventing those with poorer credit risk? I would be very interested in your thoughts! 🤔 Article below:

When it comes to credit unions, there are a lot of misconceptions and myths. At SECU, we’re dedicated to providing our members with the tools they need to separate the facts from the fiction. While credit unions offer a lot of the same services as traditional banks, there are a few key differences that are important to consider when choosing your financial institution. A credit union is a not-for-profit organization owned by its membership, and typically has membership requirements that must be met before you can join. Decisions are made by a board of directors comprised solely of credit union members and elected directly by the members under the concept of “one member, one vote,” not by investors based on shareholdings. And, while they may not always offer every identical product that a bank offers, credit unions offer competitive interest and deposit rates, and profits made are often reinvested in the credit union through product and service enhancements with their membership in mind.

On July 28th, celebrate your credit union by participating in the #ilovemycreditunion movement. Share your stories about why you love YOUR CU! I started early, today, and not intentionally. While talking with my stylist during a haircut, she inquired as to what made credit unions better alternatives to banks. Here is what I told her.Foremost, at a credit union, you are a Member (noticed I capitalized "Member"), not an account number. As not-for-profit financial co-operatives, our goal is to maximize our Members' financial health by putting them FIRST in EVERYTHING that we do! I'll never forget my first interview with a credit union where I was specifically told: "You'll still have goals. We will never terminate you for not hitting a goal, but we will fire you on the spot if you put our Members into a product that does not benefit them to reach a goal" (how refreshing is that?!). Next, we are Member-owned, meaning you, the Member, are a direct stakeholder with full voting rights and priviliges. Our Boards of Directors? Volunteers (not paid) elected from our field of membership! Our goal isn't to maximize shareholder value, it's to maximize Member well-being and we do that by reinvesting directly back into our organizations to offer higher rates on deposits, lower rates on loans, and technological advancements to make it easy to do business with us!Also, we have the full backing of the NCUA and our depositors are insured just as well as the banks are, if not more in some cases. Did you know that in our entire history, depositors have never lost even a SINGLE CENT at a federally insured credit union? Talk about recession-proof!Credit Unions, as a part of the co-operative spirit that makes us great, routinely help one another and work together on initiatives to move the credit union movement forward! That's right! We WORK WITH EACH OTHER to benefit ALL CU Members! I don't think Chase is picking up the phone to give advice to BOA... There are so many reasons to love your Credit Union, and if you haven't had the opportunity to explore what it's like on the other side, there's never been a better time to start! #CreditUnions #CreditUnionDifference #PeopleHelpingPeople #ILoveMyCreditUnion #CapitalizeMember

Exactly the message I've been trying to get across, just said far more eloquently and convincingly by Frank Diekmann of CUToday.info. #Creditunions are about people, right? Lobbying is important to ensure good laws, but it's not *all* you need. Most effort needs to go into communities to highlight what CUs are already doing, while empowering others to maximize their positive impacts.I said in the past that speaking out against consumer protection rules looks really bad. I have numerous articles and videos calling out CUs for punitive fee structures and even the whole system of existing off of your most financially-challenged members. It's not the mission. And it's not going to help credit unions thrive into the future. There's a reason big banks don't bother going after credit unions anymore...our industry does it to themselves. Let's make 2024 the year credit unions go "back to basics" in their mission (and yes, you definitely should be adopting modern tech to make that possible). Thanks to Becky Reed for sharing this message.

Happy #ilovemycreditunion day. These pictures are quite significant. The one on the top was when he was 1.5 months old. The one on the left is him a year later. Why post these you may ask? It’s because his first credit union account was opened when he was pictured on the top and ironically enough, my first credit union account was at about the same age. The picture on the left is him 1 year later and the picture on the right is the two of us enjoying the day and for me, it’s 35 years later and I belong to 3 different Credit Unions. Higher savings rates, lower interest rates, and less fees is the route I’ll take any day. If you don’t have a credit union account, it’s not to late to sign up for one today. Visit your local credit union and see what it’s all about. #creditunions #peoplehelpingpeople #ilovemycreditunion #newcenturyfcu
