Don't know if this will help, the M8 is close in design to the M11:

The main difference in the M-8 and later models is the valve body and pressure regulator. Everything else is similar enough that if you can work on one you should be able to work on any of them. Of course specs are different in some areas, so get a TSM for the year and model car you have.

Casting numbers on the case positively ID transmission type. An M11 will have 11-1x on the top of the case. M12 is 12-1x.

M3x - M4x are aluminum cases and have 35-1x etc in a half inch diameter oval on the side of the case.

Okay, I've jumped in and started the rebuild on my BW M11 tranny from the 74 postal jeep.actually, everything looks pretty decent. No real wear on anything. The clutch packs looked good as well as the bands and drums. No metal to metal stuff and the only real leaks I found were the front pump seal, it was destroyed, and the tail shaft seal was leaking. No real problem. I very carefully removed the valve body making sure no check balls or springs escaped. What I found were one large steel ball with spring in the correct location, one tourlon ball in the correct spot and one tourlon ball jammed in one of the veins with the side shaved off. The fourth ball was missing! I can only assume it has been this way for awhile. No loose balls running around. So now my question is, does anyone know where I might be able to get a new check ball set or possibly their sizes so I can track them down? Smaller ones look to be maybe 3/16 and the larger steel one maybe 1/4 inch.

McMaster Car and Amazon list singe ball bearings.

The 6mm is only 0.003" larger then a 1/4"and a 5mm is 0.0094" larger then 3/16".

In most cases they can be interchanged on a hydraulic system check valve.

Or find an old bicycle. The crank bearings are typically 1/4" and the wheels 3/16".

Thanks! I'll just swipe the neighbor boys bike and relieve it of some ball bearings! He won't miss em! Never thought of that. I didn't think their size was that critical but I wasn't really sure. I appreciate the good info.

Well, they CAN be critical, but I don't think a few thousandths of an inch will matter, as long as the ball moves easily in the cavity (as far as slightly larger) and seals the hole (slightly smaller) without sticking. 0.003" shouldn't make a difference.
